The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) has charged members of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the Northeast to play an active role in curbing the spread of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) in the region.
Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Adamu (Rtd), Northeast Zonal Director of the Centre who made the call in Damaturu, Yobe and Borno states on Thursday, stated that the involvement of youth would significantly help tackle insecurity.
He explained that SALW fuels banditry, kidnapping, cultism, and other crimes, hindering development and creating fears among citizens.
The Centre’s Assistant Director, Mr. Aminu Saleh Mohammed, urged corps members to report anyone involved in SALW possession or fabrication, promoting tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
The NYSC Coordinators in Yobe and Borno states welcomed the proposal to establish a Small Arms and Light Weapons Community Development Service (CDS) group, assuring collaboration with the Centre to fight SALW proliferation.
