The Growing Threat of Drug Abuse in Nigeria

By Auwal Aminu Saminaka
In contemporary Nigeria, the scourge of drug abuse has become a pressing concern, precipitating a myriad of societal problems. The proliferation of drug abuse has led to an increase in criminal behavior, posing a significant threat to the security and well-being of our communities. Unfortunately, whereas this menace was previously confined to a select few, it has now become a widespread issue, affecting many new individuals.
The gravity of drug abuse cannot be overstated, as it poses a considerable risk to our security situation and imperils the very fabric of our society. A disturbing trend has emerged, where many bandits and criminals arrested by law enforcement agencies are found to be drug abusers. These individuals often consume drugs before committing crimes, which renders them devoid of rational thought and prone to reckless behavior.
Moreover, the menace of drug abuse extends beyond crime, as it also contributes to road accidents, resulting in grievous injuries, loss of life, and destruction of property. This affects not only the perpetrators but also innocent bystanders. Regrettably, drug abuse is no longer confined to men; women and married individuals are also increasingly falling prey to this scourge, which has far-reaching implications for the upbringing and well-being of their children.
In the light of this crisis, it is imperative that relevant agencies take proactive measures to address the issue. I urge the government and security agencies to prioritize the provision of adequate security and implement effective strategies to combat drug abuse.
Furthermore, I call upon all the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and agencies like the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch awareness programs that mobilizes the public against drug abuse. Leveraging media organizations to create campaigns promoting a drug-free environment would be a crucial step in this direction.
