Worried by the closure of Union Bank PLC in Dambam local government area of Bauchi state for eight years, some community members under the cover of Concerned citizens have written to the members representing them at the Bauchi state assembly, Hon Mohammed Ahmed Garba to intervene with a view to ensuring the restoration of the Bank’s operations in the area.
Tittled, Re: Appeal For Support Towards Restoration of Union Bank Operations in Dambam LGA, the Concerned citizens, lamented that the closure of the only Bank operating in the local government eight years ago has hampered the economic activities of the people of the area.
“We write with deep respect on behalf of the people of Dambam Local Government Area to bring to your attention a matter of great importance affecting the economic and social wellbeing of our constituency”, they said.
Signed by their representative, Comr. Nazif Shehu Gwani Dambam, the Concerned citizens said, “as you may recall, Union Bank—the only commercial bank that ever operated in Dambam LGA—closed its branch over eight years ago”.
They lamented that since the closure, residents have been grappling with the lack of access to financial services.
According to them, as a result of the closure, farmers, traders, civil servants, students, and pensioners are forced to travel long distances to conduct basic transactions, exposing them to insecurity, increased costs, and loss of productivity.
The Concerned citizens further stated that community members in Dambam have before now, initiated a formal campaign for the bank’s return, including written appeals to Union Bank management, the Local Government Council, and other relevant authorities.
“However, as our elected representative in the State Assembly, your voice and intervention are essential in moving this effort forward”, they explained.
The Concerned citizens pleaded with the lawmaker to use his position and raise the matter as a motion before the House to draw the attention of state authorities and financial regulators.
They further appealed to the lawmaker to also engage with Union Bank and the Executive Arm of Government to advocate for the re-establishment of banking infrastructure in Dambam.
They observed that by lending his voice publicly and privately to support this grassroots-driven initiative, their plights would be addressed.
“We trust in your commitment to the progress of our constituency and are hopeful that your involvement will bring about the desired change for our people”, the citizens said.
The Concerned citizen prayed Allah to continue to guide and strengthen the house of assembly in the discharge of his constitutional responsibility.
