The Resurgence of Boko Haram Insurgency in Borno State
By Blessing Anazor, Bauchi
Borno State has recently experienced a renewed wave of Boko Haram attacks after a period of relative peace. Communities in Maiduguri, Konduga, Gwoza, and the Sambisa forest have been hit by ambushes, kidnappings, and assaults targeting both civilians and security personnel. Despite military efforts, the group has reorganized and adopted new tactics to terrorize residents.
These attacks have resulted in deaths, destruction of property, and mass displacement. Thousands now live in overcrowded IDP camps lacking basic necessities such as food, clean water, and healthcare. Women and children are the most affected.
The crisis has also disrupted education, forcing school closures and leaving many children out of school. Farming activities have declined due to insecurity, worsening poverty and hunger across rural communities.
The effects go beyond Borno State. National development is hindered as foreign and local investors lose confidence. Increased military spending strains resources that should be used for health, education, and infrastructure. Survivors are left to deal with trauma and emotional distress.
To resolve the crisis, a multifaceted approach is required. Beyond military efforts, community-based intelligence, youth empowerment, job creation, and quality education are key. Rehabilitation of ex-fighters and anti-corruption measures must also be prioritized. Nigeria should maintain strong collaboration with neighbouring countries to combat cross-border terrorism.
In conclusion, the Boko Haram resurgence is a reminder that the fight is not yet over. Lasting peace can only be achieved through joint efforts, transparency, and genuine commitment from all stakeholders.
