Resident Doctors deliver free surgery, other medical care to over 500 patients in Yobe

The Association of Resident Doctors of the Federal Medical center Nguru, Yobe state has carried out free surgery and other medical attention to more than 500 patients.

The resident Doctors made this known in a communique from the outcome of their end of the year annual general meeting and Scientific conference.

According to the President of the Association, Yobe state branch, Dr Ndansaw Joseph Ndifelaye, the meeting which was theme ‘Health Workforce and Governance’ also featured medical outreach that was held at Jawa, Bursari Local Government of Yobe State.

He noted that more than 500 patients received medication from various ailments.

The association in a communique, also expressed the commitment of the association towards fostering unity among its members and sister associations, its affiliate and the community to help improve the health indices of Yobe state.

It also urged patients to pay careful attention to the health education that will be given by experts and always ask questions concerning their health issues in order to get first hand information on their state of health.

According to the Communique, the program began with the Scientific Conference themed; ‘Health Workforce and Governance: The crisis in Nigeria’.

It added that presentation was made by Prof. Jamil, a consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist from Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital where the sub-theme; Medical brain drain in Nigeria: the impact on sustainable development goal 3 was presented by Prof. Mrs. Hadiza Usman, consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist in University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

The Communique explained that out of the over 500 beneficiaries, 29 patients had eye surgery, 11 patients had surgery for hernias, hydrocele and some excisional biopsies, adding that follow up for the surgical cases has been done and all the patients are in stable condition.

Speaking during the occasion, the Chief Medical Director of the host hospital, Dr Abubakar Musa Muhammad, Commended the association for organizing such a program, as according to him, it has gone a long way in assisting those who couldn’t have afford the medical attention they received.

He assured the association of cordial working relationship, adding that, his doors are opened to accommodate more of such humanitarian gesture in the hospital.

On his part, the Doctor in charge of the hospital, Alhaji Dahiru expressed gratitude to the association, noting that it was the first time such and initiative is held for the people of the community.

He said that the gesture has gone a long way towards alleviating the health needs of the people in the community, praying God to bless members of the association abundantly.

Highlight of the event during the AGM include sporting activities, health outreach, election, award presentation to staff who performed excellently in their respective disciplines, among others.
