Segun Showunmi Advocates For Electoral Reform, Inclusivity In Bauchi, Gombe Engagements
Former Ogun State gubernatorial candidate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has intensified his drive for a redefined political landscape with the promotion of his “The Alternative” initiative.
During recent meetings with various groups in Bauchi and Gombe States, Showunmi advocated for solutions to critical challenges undermining Nigeria’s democracy, including voter apathy, vote-buying, and divisive politics.
Addressing participants, Showunmi described “The Alternative” as a concept designed to empower citizens to play a more active role in determining their leaders. According to him, the idea seeks to shift power from political elites and parties to the electorate, ensuring that the people’s will is paramount.
He lamented the prevailing system where political leaders impose candidates on voters, eroding confidence in the democratic process.
“Our democracy must evolve to prioritize competence and integrity over tribal, religious, or partisan considerations,” Showunmi stated.
“We must create a system where Nigerians are free to choose their leaders without the undue influence of party affiliations or financial inducements.”
During the interactive sessions, Showunmi emphasized the need to address the root causes of low voter turnout, which he attributed to disillusionment with the current political system.
He also decried the widespread practice of vote-selling, which he argued diminishes the quality of leadership and governance.
As part of the solution, he proposed robust voter education and engagement campaigns aimed at enlightening citizens on the importance of their votes.
Showunmi also called for stronger electoral reforms to curb vote-buying and ensure transparency in the electoral process.
The meetings provided an avenue for stakeholders from diverse backgrounds to deliberate on practical strategies to restore public trust in elections.
Participants expressed optimism about Showunmi’s vision, describing it as a much-needed paradigm shift in Nigerian politics.
Showunmi’s engagement in Bauchi and Gombe States marks another milestone in his quest to build a national coalition for political inclusivity and accountability. His initiative continues to gain traction across the country, resonating with citizens eager for meaningful change in Nigeria’s democratic system.
