Concerned citizens in Bauchi have slammed the former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (Rtd) before the State High court 2, seeking the court to compel him to contest the 2023 governorship election in the state.

In a suit number BA/81/2022, which was filed by Danlami Baban Takko, 25 others, the plaintiffs gave an ultimatum of 30 days for the respondent to respond to their call.

When the case was mentioned on the 8th February, 2022, the Lead Counsel to the Plaintiff, Usman Bappa said that his clients have been agitating for good governance in Bauchi state.

“They have identified the respondent to occupy the office of the governor of the state due to his numerous achievements in the service of Nigeria when he was Chief of Air Staff.”

He said that under Section 6 Sub-Section 6 of the constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria, the court has the power to compel the respondent to declare his intentions,

He added that the interest of the applicants represents the interest of the majority of the people of the state.

Responding, the Counsel to the defendant, Idris Jibo said that the plaintiffs have already served him the notice, which he pleaded for more time to study it and file the response of his client.

Justice Kunaza Hamidu after hearing both sides of the counsel, adjourned the case to 22nd February 2022 for further mention.

The lead plaintiff, Danlami Baban Tanko shortly after the case was mentioned on Tuesday, said that the reason why they are in court is to institute a legal process that will compel Air Marshal Abubakar to contest the 2023 governorship elections because of his outstanding leadership qualities.

“The people of Bauchi need a new style of leadership and we have found Air Marshal Abubakar Sadeeq worthy of becoming the next governor come 2023. We are not just speaking for ourselves alone, but the vast majority of Bauchi citizens.”

“So far, many governorship aspirants in the state have declared their interest to contest the seat of the governor come 2023.

“It is only Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar that captured our attention and people are eager for him to come out and contest.

“We have tried various ways to compel to declare his interest to contest, but he has been dragging his feet, so we felt using the court of law can compel to quickly declare his interest,” he said.
