Breaking: Buhari Approves Stipend for Education Students in PublicTertiary Institutions

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the sum of N75,000 as a stipend per semester for students studying degree programmes in Education in public universities in Nigeria.

Malam Adamu, the Minister of Education, who made the announcement on Tuesday at the World Teachers’ Day celebration in Eagle Square, Abuja in a speech delivered on his behalf by Arc. Sonny Echono, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education also said, the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) students will get N50,000 as a stipend per semester as part of the deliberate effort of the goverment to attract the best brains into the teaching profession as promised by President Muhammadu Buhari last year.

According to Adamu, his ministry would work with state governments to ensure that students are automatically employed upon graduation.

“Undergraduate B.Ed / B.A. Ed / BSc. Ed students in public institutions will receive stipends of N75,000.00 per semester, while NCE students will receive stipends of N50,000.00 per semester”, he said.

Prowling Eagles, however, recollect that, similar statement was made last year for Bachelor of Education students with promise of granting them automatic employment after graduation.

Same Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, who represented President Buhari at the event to mark World Teachers Day in Abuja in 2020, said “this is now a Federal Government policy”.

President, as read by Hon. Minister said, “The payment of stipends to Bachelor of Education students, as well as granting them automatic employment after graduation is now a government policy”.

The President further said that the Tertiary Education Fund (TETFUND) will now fund teaching practice in Universities and Colleges of Education in the country.

He also promised low-cost housing for teachers in rural areas, among other things.
