Nigerian Cancer Society sympathizes with UMTH, Borno Govt. over flooding

The National President of the Nigerian Cancer Society, Dr Adamu Alhassan Umar has sympathised with the Chief Medical Director Professor Ahmed Ahidjo, the management and staff of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the entire people of Maiduguri and Borno state at large over the recent devastating flood which led to lost of lives and properties.

Dr. Adamu who stated this in a press statement on Friday on behalf of the Nigerian Cancer Stakeholders and Survivors, regretted that the heavy flood which submerged people’s homes, bridges,roads, schools, business centres, the new State of the art machines in the U.M.T.H cancer centre, and health equipments worth billions of Naira in the teaching hospital with antecedent lost of lives around the Maiduguri metropolis has taken us way back in terms of the successes recorded with improvement in health outcomes in the north east region of the country.

The president appealed for regional and international interventions with immediate effect in order to save the situation and alleviate the suffering of the people of the state.

The UMTH which is the largest hospital in West Africa with over 3000 bed capacity also received patients for the cheapest cancer treatment available from all over Nigeria and neighbouring countries like Niger republic, Cameroon and Chad republic among others.

Dr. Adamu called on the federal government to consider the case of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital as disaster case that affects northern Nigeria health sector and the country in general in order to overcome the problem through a rapid response to remedy the situation.

The president also sympathized with the Borno state governor, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum zulum and the Shehu of Borno, HRH Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai over the heavy flood in Maiduguri that lead to the lost of proprieties worth billions of Naira, including human lives.

Dr Adamu also prayed for the almighty Allah to replace what UMTH and Borno community lost during the disaster.
