Health Expert gives tips on healthy living during Hamarttan

As the harmattan season approaches, Chief Medical Director, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Professor Ahmed Ahidjo has made available, tips for a healthy living during the Season.
Prof Ahidjo while enlightening the general public in a press statement on Saturday, said Harmattan is a seasonal wind that blows from the Sahara Desert into West Africa, particularly during the winter months (December to February).
According to him, Harmattan has an effect on respiration which can lead to dryness and irritation, asthma and bronchitis, cough and sneezing.
He said during Harmattan, people experience dry Skin, chapped lips and skin irritation, adding that problems such dry eyes, eye irritation, eye redness and itchiness are being experienced.
Others the Chief Medical Director said are, headaches and joint pain.
Prof Ahidjo said, to remedy the situation, people should ensure they stay hydrated, use humidifiers, wear protective gear like masks, Goggles, and protective clothing.
He advised people to apply moisturizer on their skin and lips as well as stay indoor.
“Remember to consult a healthcare professional if you experience any severe symptoms or discomfort”, he said.
