North East Development Commission Champions Youth, Unity Through Sports

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) recently demonstrated its commitment to rebuilding lives and fostering unity in the region by hosting the just-concluded North East Inter-Secondary School Games in Bauchi State.
The event brought together young talents from across the six states of the North East, including Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe, in an exhilarating display of athleticism, teamwork, and community spirit.
The games, which spanned several days, featured various sporting events, including football, basketball, volleyball, athletics, and table tennis.
These activities showcased the remarkable potential of the youth in the region. Through this initiative, the NEDC seeks to identify and nurture young athletes, laying the groundwork for future national and international sports stars.
The North East has endured years of conflict and devastation, leaving scars on its people and infrastructure. Recognizing the unifying power of sports, the NEDC has strategically used events like this to heal communities, inspire hope, and promote social cohesion.
In his address during the closing ceremony, NEDC Managing Director, Mohammed Alkali, emphasized the significance of the Games in uniting the youth and fostering a spirit of healthy competition. “Sports is a powerful tool for reconciliation and nation-building.
By bringing young people together, we are not just discovering talents; we are building bridges across communities and inspiring a future of peace and prosperity,” Alkali stated.
The Games were filled with thrilling moments, with each participating school putting on stellar performances.
Bauchi State’s representatives stood out in athletics, while teams from Borno and Adamawa excelled in football and volleyball, respectively.
The event culminated in a grand closing ceremony at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium on Friday 15, November, 2024 where winners were awarded medals, trophies, and scholarships.
The success of the North East Inter-Secondary School Games has set a precedent for future editions, with calls for it to become an annual event.
Beyond sports, the initiative has highlighted the importance of education, skill development, and community integration in the ongoing recovery efforts in the North East.
By empowering young people through sports and education, the NEDC continues to play a pivotal role in restoring the region’s vibrancy and unlocking the potential of its resilient population.
