Death of Mr Salisu: FMC Misau speaks

Following speculations on social media relating to the death of a patient, Mr Salisu in an ambulance while being conveyed from the newly established federal medical center Misau to University Teaching Hospital Azare, the management of FMC Misau on Thursday issued a press statement to clarify on the matter.

Head, Public Relations and Protocol officer of the hospital, the statement said the deceased Mr Salisu was on Wednesday, 23rd July 2025, brought to the Emergency Unit of FMC Misau at 8:05 a.m. in a critical condition and his oxygen saturation was extremely low, and his blood pressure was nearly unrecordable.

“He was promptly admitted, resuscitated, and placed on medications. After about one hour, his vitals improved, his blood pressure became appreciable and oxygen levels were restored to optimal levels, though he remained unconscious”, the statement narrated.

It explained that after medical evaluation, it was determined that he required intensive care support, a service not yet available at our centre, and he was referred to the nearest teaching hospital, accompanied by an emergency nurse onboard the ambulance to monitor his condition en route.

“Unfortunately, approximately 19km from Misau, the patient’s condition suddenly deteriorated and he suffered a convulsion. Despite all efforts, he passed away before arrival at the referral centre”, the FMC management said.

The statement further said that “the medical diagnosis has been formally documented, but in respect of ethical standards and patient confidentiality, we are unable to disclose clinical details publicly”.

The statement further said it is important to note that FMC Misau has recorded a 50% reduction in mortality rate over the past year, a testament to the continuous efforts of the management and staff to improve emergency response and patient care outcomes.

While assuring that the hospital remains committed to doing even more, the FMC which acknowledge the pain and frustration expressed by some members of the public, however cautioned against the spread of unverified narratives that may misrepresent facts and undermine the hard work of our healthcare professionals.

It debunked speculations of negligence, saying “there was no negligence, and the care rendered was in full accordance with clinical standards. We welcome constructive feedback, but urge all to be responsible in their communication, especially during moments of grief”.

The statement maintained that emergency care was promptly provided without delay, in line with the hospital’s standard practice, adding that any financial obligations were part of routine hospital procedures and did not interfere with the immediate medical attention given.

“As a relatively new tertiary institution, FMC Misau remains fully committed to its core mandate of “Service with Diligence.” We continue to expand our infrastructure, train our workforce, and improve emergency service delivery to meet the needs of our growing patient population”, the statement said.

It announced that an internal review of the case is ongoing, and any identified lapses if any, will be addressed in line with institutional policy.

The FMC Misau which symphatizes with the family of late Salisu, pray that Allah strengthen their hearts and grant them peace.

It informed the general public that FMC Misau remains their hospital, and the hospital stand by its commitment to deliver care that is safe, professional, and compassionate.
