International Women’s Day: 15,000 Women street-marched in Bauchi, demands equal opportunity, voting rights

No fewer than 15,000 women marched on streets within Bauchi state capital on Tuesday during the 2022 International Women’s Day celebration to demand for better pay, voting rights, equal opportunities, better life for themselves and the generation of women to come.

Speaking to newsmen in Bauchi, the Executive Director of a Non-governmental organization, Ganvi Women and Youths Empowerment Initiative, Matshi Mary Tuta said that the aimed of the street march was to celebrate every Woman for the little struggle and contributions in the society.

Tuta who noted that the International Women’s Day is a day where every common Woman should be celebrated both locally and globally, pointed out that both social, cultural and political achievements of Women are been celebrated.

“We recognize the outstanding successes of women despite the division, inequalities and boundaries.
We advocate for gender equality for a sustainable tomorrow”, she said.

Tuta opined that it was time for the world to value women’s advancement and embrace diversity, equality and inclusion.

“We demand a world free of bias, stereotypes and discriminations, a place where difference is valued, a place free for every woman to thrive”, she said.

According to Mary Tuta, women have a little or no means at all in terms of decision making which affects them directly, adding that, social seclusion and powerlessness has left women in an unfavorable living conditions.

She stressed that decision makers are people who were brought to the world by Women, yet Women are relegated to the back seat.

Tuta said it was not healthy enough that women sit at home and not harness their potentials without contributing to the society as well as allowing their gender be used against them.

She said, “in terms of climate crisis, what opportunities can women take in regards to creating a sustainable future for our community and beyond?
Being a woman is not an excuse for seclusion”.
