Bauchi assembly speaker tasks elites on support to education as a way of pay back

The Bauchi state assembly speaker, Rt. Hon Abubakar Suleiman has challenged the elites and politicians to payback to their respective communities by supporting education in all ramifications.

The speaker gave the challenge during the closing ceremony of a Quiz & Debate Competition and Scholarship Disbursement organized by Burra Students Association (BUSA).

Our Corresspondent reports that the programme was sponsored by a London-based medical consultant Dr. Magaji Sani Abubakar which took place at GSS Burra Assembly Hall on Sunday.

Represented by his Spokesperson, Abdul Ahmad Burra, the speaker described education as the backbone for the development of every individual and every community.

He said there is the need for all elites and politicians in the State to invest heavily in the education sector as a payback to the communities in which they were born or nursed.

“This is the reason I initiated many educational support programmes when I was a civil servant and after I joined politics in which every year, I pay off the registration of UTME and disburse bursaries to students from my Emirate”, the speaker said.

Speaker Abubakar who noted that he started his secondary education in GSS Burra, hence the need to payback to the people of Burra, adding that he has been supporting the education of many people there since 2010.

“My greatest priority as a politician is education. In fact my future political ambition is based on my desire to support education and bring job opportunities for my people from the federal level”, he said.

The Bauchi speaker assured the people of Burra and the entire Ningi Emirate of his resolve to continue to offer helping hands in education, job creation and development of the various communities.

He commended Dr. Magaji Sani Abubakar for his foresight and patriotism by supporting the education of his community though he is far away in UK, urging others to emulate him.

Speaker Abubakar who also commended BUSA for their committment and sacrifice to their community, donated two hundred thousand naira for the continuation of the ongoing construction of the Association’s Multipurpose Secretariat which comprised a town hall, ICT Centre, classes and offices.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Occasion who is also the Dean Faculty of Life Science and Director Centre for Biotechnology Studies, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Professor Muhammad Nasiru Shuaibu, commended the patriotic spirit of the Students’ Association and Dr. Magaji Sani Abubakar which he said will go along way in boosting education and accelerating development in Burra District and the State in general.

The Chairman who was represented by Dr. Umar Yahaya, stressed the need for all parents and community leaders to join hands together to ensure all male and female in the area are educated as there is no legacy to bequeath the younger generation than education.

In his speech, the President of the Association Auwal Garba Burra explained that they organized the competition to boost the morale and expose the talents of students of secondary schools in the seven wards of the District.

According to him, the Programme which was fully sponsored by Dr. Magaji Sani Abubakar, an indigene of the area and UK-based medical consultant in order to boost education in his community, comprised quiz and debate competition among all the secondary schools in Burra District, and scholarship disbursement.

The President stated that Dr. Magaji Sani provided all the prizes for the winners of the competition which include silver medals, English, Mathematics and science and textbooks and other gifts while the scholarship scheme which the sponsor pledged to maintain throughout his lifetime, will support the registration of 6 brilliant students, 3 male and 3 female into higher institutions every year.

At the end of the Debate Competition, Government Girls Day Secondary School Burra won first position while in Quiz Competition JIBWIS Science Secondary School Burra won the first position.
