Hasty suspension of Senator Ningi unfair, negates democratic values – ABASI

By Samuel Luka, Bauchi

The Association of Bauchi state Indigenes (ABASI) in Abuja has kicked against the suspension of Senator Representing Bauchi Central at the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Abdul Ningi by the Nigerian Senate last week.

This was contained in a Communique of the emergency meeting of ABASI which took place at their Garki, Abuja Secretariat on Saturday.

According to the Communique, the decision was reached, following an emergency meeting conducted by the ABASI to deliberate on the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi following allegations of budget padding he levelled against the Senate recently.

Jointly signed by the Chairman of the association, Alhaji Salisu Bello, his vice, Alh. Ahmed Garba Aminu, the Secretary, Alh. Saidu Adamu Hussaini and Director Communications,
Danladi Hassan Kobi, the group concluded that the suspension of Senator Ningi was hasty, which denied him fair hearing.

“The Association in its deliberations reviewed the circumstances of the suspension of distinguished Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi and came to the conclusion that the senate was hasty as he was denied the opportunity to defend his claim which negates the principles of fair hearing”, the Communique said.

It added that the ABASI viewed the action of the Senate as inimical to the advancement of the democratic norms already set by their predecessors.

The association resolved that hasty punishment meted on Senator Ningi was unfair and tantamount to negation of all values known in a
democratic setting in Nigeria.

According to them, the Senators failed to investigate all the allegations raised by Senator Ningi but were quick to call for his suspension which suggests that there is more to it than meets the eye.

The Association while calling on all well-meaning citizens to condemn Ningi’s suspension, said the action of the Senate runs counter to the Democratic stance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other well meaning Nigerian Leaders who are bent on bequeathing a free and egalitarian society in the country.

The association which called for the reversal of Senator Ningi’s suspension, declared total support to what it described as significant and purposeful leadership of Abdul Ningi in the
Senate.

The association which also commended Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state for supporting Senator Ningi in his trying moment, urged the people of the state irrespective of their political affiliations, rally round the unfairly treated senator to overcome the present challenge.
